NYC Democratic Mayoral Nominee Zohran Mamdani Says ‘We Should Not Have Billionaires’

Self-Described Socialist Poised to Make History as First Muslim Asian Mayor

New York City’s Democratic candidate for mayor, Zohran Mamdani, stated on Sunday that he thinks having billionaires is not a good idea. He emphasized his progressive views on the economy as he aims to become the city’s first Muslim and Asian mayor.

Billionaire Comments Spark Attention

“I believe we shouldn’t have billionaires because there’s a huge gap between the wealthy and everyone else right now. We really need to work towards more fairness and equality in our city, state, and country,” Mamdani shared with NBC News’s Kristen Welker during an interview on “Meet the Press,” when discussing his democratic socialist beliefs.

The candidate emphasized a spirit of teamwork, stating, “I’m excited to partner with everyone, even billionaires, to create a city that is fair for everyone.”

Stunning Political Rise

Mamdani surprised many people in American politics this week. He appeared to be on his way to winning the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City, all while competing against former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“In the inspiring words of Nelson Mandela, things often feel impossible until we achieve them. My friends, we have achieved this! You are the reason it happened. I am truly honored to be your Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City,” Mamdani shared in a post on the social media platform X early Wednesday.

Focus on Economic Inequality

In his appearance on “Meet the Press,” Mamdani highlighted the tough economic situation in New York. He mentioned that one out of every four New Yorkers is living in poverty, while many others feel anxious about their financial stability.

“And we’ve noticed that this city needs to be affordable for the people who work hard to make it what it is every day,” he added.

Historic Candidacy

If Mamdani becomes the mayor of New York City, he will make history as the first Muslim and Asian person to hold that position, which would be an important moment in the city’s political story.
