Wendy Sánchez was born in New Mexico in 1969. She attended El Camino College and then continued her education at the University of Southern California. During her school years, she was known as Wendy Sánchez.
She began her career in broadcasting at a television station in Phoenix called KTVK-TV. From there, she was featured on the “Extra” news magazine show and co-hosted a morning show called “Good Day LA.” Additionally, she was the first host of the popular dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance.”
She is a journalist who has won an Emmy Award and used to be a news anchor. She worked with Fox Sports Net, where she was recognized for her excellent work and nominated for an Emmy. In 1999, she returned to KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, where she went on to win an Emmy for her reporting.
Aviation Career
At 40, Sánchez achieved her dream of becoming a licensed helicopter pilot, inspired by her father, a flight instructor. She obtained her helicopter pilot’s license in June 2016. The following year, she started Black Ops Aviation, which became the first aerial film production company owned by a woman. She has three kids: a son named Nikko with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez, a son named Evan, and a daughter named Ella with her ex-husband, Patrick Whitesell, who works in the entertainment industry. She married Patrick for 14 years and finalized their divorce in 2019. Together, they have two children, Evan and Ella.

Recent Achievements
Sánchez wrote a children’s book called “The Fly Who Flew to Space,” which came out in English and Spanish in 2024. The story follows a fly named Flynn who goes on an adventure into space and returns with a stronger belief in caring for our planet. Sánchez explained to People that the book represents the ideas of curiosity and chasing after our dreams. It made a big splash by appearing on the New York Times bestseller list on September 29.
According to its website, the 55-year-old is also the vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, which focuses on addressing climate change, protecting the environment, and supporting early childhood education and housing assistance.
In January, Sánchez joined Bezos at US President Donald Trump’s inauguration for his second term. They sat beside well-known figures Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg during the ceremony.
